Redesigning Life from the Roots
fromtheroots is an East Afrikan autonomous learning space calling us back into our full sovereignty as individuals and communities through repairing what was broken through the trauma of colonialism. As the collapse of an unsustainable way of life continues to accelerate, fromtheroots invites us to look at what belongs to us. By engaging there, we can remake ourselves whole and reconstruct worlds that reaffirm and revitalise life for all beings—human, more-than-human, and the invisible.
Through our collective work, we honour and repair the wounds of history to bring about worlds of beauty and justice. Our name comes from a quest to practise redesigning life from the roots. We emphasise the movements into thriving life that are entirely possible after we disentangle the roots of colonial wounding and reconnect to nourishing indigenous roots. This is why we are fromtheroots.
Held and Articulated by Wangũi wa Kamonji
fromtheroots is articulated through Wangũi wa Kamonji, a child of three lineages in East Afrika, all of whom experienced violent land dispossession and displacement through colonialism.
Born and based in Ongata Rongai, East Afrika, Wangũi is a regeneration practitioner researching and translating indigenous Afrikan knowledges into experiential processes, art, and honey to provide rooted, embodied tools for us to decolonise and reindigenise.
Her practice moves away from a purely head-based awareness of structural harm toward lived, embodied experimentation.
Through her stewardship of Serian Sanctuary and the broader curriculum, she walks alongside communities navigating the slow, sacred work of collective repair.
